There was a time when Aosta and Ivrea were a single province, the province of Aosta from 1927 to 1945, after which Aosta became the capital of the Autonomous Region with Special Statute, the Valle d'Aosta. 90 years later Aosta and Ivrea will have one thing in common again: a great mountain race that from the central square rises to the top of the mountain symbol of the city. We are obviously talking about the reborn Aosta-Becca di Nona and the Ivrea-Mombarone. Two races similar in spirit and course, albeit with some differences, which have decided to give life to a spectacular combined, based on the sum of the times, which at the level of male records are very similar, comparing the 1h55'17 " of the Ivrea-Mombarone of Jonathan Wyatt, the greatest climber of all time 6 times World Champion of mountain running , with 1h53′ and a few seconds to the Aosta-Becca di Nona of the Aosta Valley champion Jean Pellissier (obtained for another during the ascent and descent race), for another record holder on the Mombarone with 1h57'18 "until 2014 and winner of three editions.
Many champions have stepped on the paths that lead to the summit of the Becca di Nona and the Mombarone, just read their respective golden books, but how can we forget the rulers of world ski mountaineering Matteo Eydallin and Damiano Lenzi, winners of two editions of the Becca di Nona, or Catherine Bertone, who in 2014 set the Ivrea-Mombarone record with 2h26'20 "to take flight towards the blue jersey of the mountain race with the world bronze of Zermatt , the Italian marathon title and the possible Olympic marathon in Rio.
The Aosta-Becca di Nona scheduled for Sunday, July 17, will take place every two years, it ran from 2005 to 2012 (born as a complement to the ascent and descent race), although in the last two editions the bad weather forced the organizers to bring the arrival in Pila to the top of the forest track, has a development of 13 km and an uphill difference of 2562 meters.
Departure Chanoux square q. 580 m, passages to Pont Suaz (590m) Charvensod, Bondine (1043m) Ponteille (1706m) Comboé (2122m), Le Plan Vallée (2316m), Gran Sex (2609m), Bivouac Federigo (2907m) and arrival at Becca di Nona (3142m).
The Ivrea-Mombarone will be run for the 40th edition on Sunday 18 September, has a development of 20 km and an uphill difference of 2100 meters, from 247 meters of the start of Piazza Ottinetti to 2371 meters of the finish line of the Colma del Mombarone, passing through Bienca, Andrate, San Giacomo, Valneira, Pinalba and the Mombarone hut.
Both routes are marked and permanent, so as to allow anyone to try the race, travel times or simply get to the top of the two mountains.
The statements of the organizers
Laurent Chuc for Aosta-Becca di Nona:
"I am very happy with this collaboration with the Friends of Mombarone. A combination that will combine two very similar races that both start from the city centers to reach the peaks that overlook the cities. Unlike the Ivrea-Mombarone, our race will take place every two years."
Gualtiero ’ Maringoni for Ivrea-Mombarone
"Surely this new combined formula will give new prestige to the two races, creating a good challenge for the athletes who will face them, confronting each other in different race periods, July and September, so that the final result will not be so obvious. And then the peculiarity of the two races is the fact of starting from their own urban centers immersing themselves in the alpine contexts that surround them."
